P2P site Qtrax allegedly signs Universal Music deal

Peer-to-peer music service Qtrax may be more than three months late, but new reports have the company finally signing a deal with Universal Music Group. Back in January, the new company announced it would work with the four major labels to bring users free music, with ads as the sole source of revenue. The labels, comprised of EMI, Sony BMG, Universal and Warner, promptly denied the claims.

Thus far, the site has not launched, although there are eight country sites set up, offering a beta version of the QTrax software for Windows XP and Vista. Another eight countries are promised, as is support for the Mac OS X.

There is no other news as to progress of talks with the other three major labels, nor when the site will have full-fledged software available for download. As of now, Qtrax is offering only an email sign-up for updates on a 2008 launch.

In March, Qtrax reportedly finalized agreements with EMI Publishing, Sony/ATV Music Publishing and TVT Records.
