Gateway intros new FX, mainstream towers

Gateway this morning revamped the core of its desktop line to take advantage of newer processors. The FX7026 and the higher-end FX541 series replace earlier models in Gateway's gaming line and all focus on quad-core as well as fast 3D. The base FX7026 starts off with a 2.5GHz Core 2 Quad, 4GB of RAM, and a factory-overclocked GeForce 8800 GT for video. It also includes Western Digital's new 640GB Caviar drive at its $1,100 price point. The FX541 series adds an SLI-capable mainboard with two GPU slots; a stock $1,200 model is similar to its lower-end sibling, while the FX541XT at the very high end includes an overclocked but unnamed CPU as well as dual GeForce 8800 GT cards and other features for $3,500.

At the mid-range, Gateway is also adding four new GT Series desktops for retail buyers. The GT5670, GT5674, GT5676 and GT5678 scale up from AMD's three-core Phenom X3 (GT5670) and four-core X4 (GT5674 and GT5676) processors to an Intel-made 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad in the top GT5678. The PC builder also equips the systems either with integrated NVIDIA graphics on base AMD systems to dedicated Radeon HD 3200 video on the faster models. Storage ranges from 320GB to 750GB. The bottom- and top-end systems come with 3GB and 4GB of RAM respectively, with prices ranging from $550 to $850.

The updates finish with the DX442 line for online shoppers. The line scales from a Pentium dual-core to a Core 2 Quad and comes only with X3100 integrated video; RAM scales from 2GB to 3GB, while hard drives vary from 320GB to 500GB. Gateway sells theses systems for between $550 and $1,000.
