Associated Press launches iPhone site

The Associated Press has launched a new iPhone version of its online portal, according to an announcement. The newswire service notes that the site should now be visible by visiting apnews.com, and that it contains not just AP news but material from over 100 media outlets, covering topics such as breaking events, business and entertainment. Publications involved include the likes of the San Francisco Chronicle and the Miami Herald.

Although available on other cellphones as well, the iPhone edition of the portal is optimized for its display ratio, and features distinct navigation buttons. A special section is devoted to photo browsing, and unlike some iPhone sites users can also view video footage. News presented can be customized based on a person's location.

If the iPhone has a real browser, can't you just do all of that in Safari to begin with? I thought you didn't need to create special versions of your websites for the iPhone/iPod.

That comment could not come from Testudo, who is usually makes pithy, but accurate and well thought out comments.

The real testudo would know that resolution is different, as well as the aspect ratio. Sure, most sites are usable with Safari on iPhone, but for quick loading, no nonsense news, the msnbc iPhone optimized site, OR the ESPN site cannot be beat.

This site from AP is also nice; I like the local content section.
