TomTom Rider 2nd edition

TomTom on Thursday launched its Rider 2nd Edition portable navigation system made for motorcycle riders. The systems utilize a Cardo scala-rider Bluetooth headset to relay instructions and allow for hands-free calling. The 2nd Edition was upgraded with more features from the company's in-car units, including Map Share that allows users to share voice messages, points of interest or even itineraries via Bluetooth. A new Help Me! button can either connect riders with or find the nearest emergency services and roadside assistance.

The 3.5-inch touchscreens are glare-resistant and can be operated with gloved hands. The volume of instructions increases along with speed, while newly-added enhanced trip statistics include average and maximum speeds, as well as distance from home. All of TomTom's Rider GPS units are waterproof as per the IPX-7 standard and come with a universal RAM motorcycle mount that resists vibrations. Battery life is rated at five hours, and the units could be plugged in on bikes so configured.

Map information is stored on an included SD card, while a carrying case, screen-cleaning cloth and safety tether are also included with the Rider 2nd edition.

The units will come preloaded with either Europe or UK/Ireland maps and sell for an equivalent of $780 and $685, respectively, when they go on the market in May. The Rider units are expected to reach the US market, although it is not clear when. [via Pocket-lint]
