Rumor floats new iMac next week

An upgrade to the iMac desktop line could be available as early as next week, according to an apparent tip sent to Geeksugar. The woman-oriented technology site claims the refresh will keep similar price points but upgrade the processors and potentially hard drive space as well. The change would be the first since the aluminum design was first introduced in August of last year.

While unverified, the rumor comes from a similar source that purportedly was accurate in predicting the recent MacBook refreshes and fits in line with the company's historical preference for updating the all-in-one computer in April.

Upgrades are likely to draw on newer Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors based on the chipmaker's 45 nanometer Penryn architecture, which allows for higher clock speeds without increasing heat and also adds both new media instructions and increased Level 2 cache for processor instructions. New video hardware is not mentioned in the claimed leak but may also take advantage of AMD's ATI Radeon HD 3400 and 3600 series chipsets.

Why is it always necessary to speculate, what will come and which specs the stuff "might" have? Like we hadn't enough trash-information already everywhere. Is it reall hard to just wait those 2 weeks and issue the news when the products are actually introduced?

Sometimes, these rumors can be helpful to someone thinking about buying a new machine. Were this to happen, people would usually want to wait (if they could) to see if they could get more proc bang for their buck.

Myself, I really wish I could have waited another 4 months and I would have ridden the new Intel switch and be able to run Parallels. Instead I have the fastest mobile G4 they made. Instead, there's only an ancient version of VPC available that even bogs down running AutoCAD.

Yes, this one is a possible minor upgrade, but rumors, esp. in the realms of purchasing and Apple announcements, can help YOU as a consumer/professional.

I don't think that a CPU upgrade constitutes a new iMac. Its the same iMac does all the same stuff it just got a CPU refresh.

Upgrade the CPU, add in a 5 Mega Pixel iSight, the ability to add a second internal hard drive, an OLED display, and a BluRay Burner then you have a new iMac.

How about a Mac Mini Refresh with a new CPU, non-integrated video card, and BluRay Burner?

..not because the iMacs aren't fast, but because they should refresh their line every 6 months or so anyway. Bigger HDs are cheap, but how about a better video card for the iMac? How about a refresh for the Mac mini for once?

I will wait it out a couple of weeks to order an iMac. Plus waiting until August to buy a 17" MBP, which I hope will be updated too.

Not only did they predict that the new iMac would be faster and *possibly* even include a bigger hard drive, but they had the clairvoyance to note it might use the latest Intel chips! Gee, who would have thunk it?

As if Dvorak wasn't bad enough, using Macthusiasm as a way to generate site traffic, now we have wimmin's sites doing the same thing. Great. Most infuriating of course is that the Macthusiasts bite everytime! This site deserves a D.O.S.

This is a nice perk resulting from Apple not allowing its consumers to upgrade their computers, or truly customize them. They can now call this a "new iMac."

Bravo. I am a new man today because I ate cheerios for breakfast and changed my socks.
