Mac OS X on Samsung UMPC

Blogger Kevin Tofel is currently trying to demonstrate a proof of concept by installing Mac OS X on an ultramobile PC - in particular, the Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium - noting that most of the operating system's features map correctly to the corresponding controls on the device. While still in a very experimental stage, the Mac OS was able to recognize the touch screen as a tablet, the dual-function stick as a scroll mouse with two buttons, as well as the keyboard, and volume controls.

Tofel writes that the built-in WiFi and Ethernet do not yet function, but a straightforward installation of the VZ Access software allowed his EV-DO modem to work.

Tofel notes that he is not doing this to provide a step-by-step how-to guide for other users to imitate, or to use on a permanent basis, rather just to show that it can be done.

    tablet computers

I know Apple want to have a stream-lined product line, but i think a Mac OS X tablet computer would be sweet.

I would assume that Apple still have the Newton handwriting technology and we already know that Mac OS X has the Ink system preference if you have a tablet attached to the USB.

Surely those technologies can be used as the basis for a tablet Mac?

    iTunes has copy protectio

iTunes has copy protection. Take it or leave it NBC. I don't think Apple is going to change there DRM at this late stage of the game. You want to play with iTunes then you have to play by Apple's rules. I don't see any stories about Apple begging them to come back either.

I knew this would happen as iTunes is the best online store for multi-Media hands down. Sales prove it.

    I will likely

get a handed down Toshiba tablet soon.

It will need a hard drive (the failure of which led to it becoming mine), but I'm thinking of trying that notebook CF-IDE adapter with a couple of 8 or 16 GB cards. It also has CF, SD and maybe Memory Stick slots.

I may try installing OS X on it. I only have Tiger. I so DDR how hard that will be?
