GeForce 8800GT for older Mac Pros released

updated 03:15 pm EDT, Tue April 15, 2008

GeForce 8800GT

The long-awaited NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT upgrade for Mac Pros has been released. The graphics card features 512MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory, uses the PCI Express interface, and includes two dual-link DVI ports, and is capable of driving up to two 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays. It requires a Mac Pro (bus speed 1.33GHz) with PCI-Express. The card is priced at $280 and can be purchased as a standalone, user-installable item or as a build-to-order option for Early 2008 Mac Pros through the online Apple Store. Controversy ensued when Apple introduced this upgrade card as an option available exclusively to newly purchased Mac Pros in January. At the time, users presented research that shows the cards should be backwards compatible. Apple is now making the kit available, in supported fashion, to all Mac Pros with a bus speed for at least 1.33GHz.

    apple manipulation?

    Say it isn't so! Could it possibly be that Apple were acting in their own interest rather than that of their customers? This must be the first time, mustn't it???

    @feathers

    Didn't get it. You mean Apple delayed 8800 GT with EFI32 on purpose? To make people switch to newer Mac just to be able to install this card? Or you believe that "research" saying the card is actually compatible? Yep, it is, like any other PCI-express card out there is socket-compatible with any PCIe Mac Pro.

    Apple actually listened for once! I'll be ordering one as soon as I get my stupid stimulus check... :-)

    Had to call to order it.

    It doesn't show up on the online Apple Store yet (the 800GT for the new Mac Pros references the new card for the older machines, but it doesn't turn up on search), so I called and placed the order.

    Ordering now!

    Turns up in the Australian store as:

    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (1st Generation) Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro for A$ 369.00

    Can't wait for this. My X1900XT was taken out, taken apart and cleaned thoroughly with compressed air this week and it still gives me grief (complete hangs, graphic glitches etc.)
