Toshiba intros new-look Satellites, L350

Toshiba on Tuesday completely overhauled the look of its Satellite notebooks with four new systems, as well as an old-look 17-inch model. Following a similar update in Europe, the company has changed from its longstanding silver-and-gray to a new subtler look. Referred to as Horizon, the design both adds an imprint design as well as a completely flush trackpad and a much subtler glossy, dark gray finish. It also adds touch-sensitive CD and DVD movie playback controls similar to recent HP systems.

The newer designs start with the 13.3-inch U400, a replacement for the compact U300 that adds a faster 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive. The M400 brings similar specs while gaining a 14-inch screen. The A300 is Toshiba's mainstream system 15.4 inches and switches to AMD processors to bring down the price, running on a 2.2GHz Turion 64 X2 while boosting RAM to 3GB and adding faster 802.11n Wi-Fi. A lone desktop replacement, the P300, returns to the same 1.83GHz Intel processor as the U300 but starts with a smaller 200GB hard drive in return for 3GB of RAM.

Prices for these systems start at $827 for the base P300 and climb up to $1,000 for the top A300.

Keeping to Toshiba's legacy design, the L350 is aimed at bringing 17-inch notebooks into the low-cost realm with a 2GHz Turion 64 X2, 2GB of RAM, and a 200GB hard drive. It should be available now at $750.
