Pavilion and Media Vault

HP today rolled out a slew of updates to its mainstream desktops and also touched on its Media Vault server. The PC builder's m9200t media center now has the pick of Blu-ray combo and burner drives for HD video and up to 1TB of storage; it also picks up the choice of 45 nanometer Core 2 Duos as well as 65 nanometer Core 2 Quad chips. This relative flagship system is already available and starts at $800.

In an opposite approach, the a6460t (pictured) is now billed as one of HP's greener PCs with both an Energy Star rating and an 80 percent efficient power supply; the system is also one of the first in the class to come with a Core 2 Quad as an option. Wi-Fi and a TV tuner are optional on the $550 system.

At the entry level, HP has also updated two starter systems. The a6400z sells at $300 with a 1.8GHz AMD Sempron, 1GB of RAM, and 250GB of storage; the Compaq-branded Presario SR5450F doesn't yet have listed specifications but upgrades to 2GB of RAM, a 15-in-1 card reader, and a Pentium dual-core processor for less than $500.

HP has also introduced the Media Vault mv2120. The hub is aimed at home and small business users who want simplified network-attached storage and in its newer form offers 500GB that can be used to share photos and other files on the Internet as well as most any media on the local network; it also works as an iTunes server for users who want to host songs separately from any one computer. The mv2120 ships for $300.
