Mexican iPhone set for June?

The iPhone could be headed to Mexico as soon as June, a Mexican newspaper reports. The paper cites a source within Apple, who says that the company is in talks with Telcel, Mexico's largest cellular carrier. Reporters are also said to have made a number of calls to Apple US customer support, and been told multiple times that while iPhones cannot currently be shipped to Mexico, the phone should become available domestically in June. This is the same month as Apple's planned iPhone 2.0 firmware update.

The source within Apple adds that the phone could premiere in some South American countries on the same day, but that the exact launch date is unknown, and no other carriers have been put forward.

Of concern to Mexicans may be cost, as while a 16GB iPhone is $499 in the US, after taxes, tariffs and currency conversion, this may amount to 7,410 pesos ($674). Some experts are said to believe however that Apple will deliberately slash the price of the Mexican iPhone, in order to remain competitive in a market with a relatively small middle class.

Canada someday?

Although I'm one of the dozens in my company alone that has an iPhone in Canada ... I find it hard to believe that it's so hard to bring it here.

Not so much that I'd buy one, but it'd legitimize support with carriers and we might be able to more easily find/buy accessories, etc.

Ahhhh.... Dream a little dream. Guess we need to triple our population before we really care in the big scheme of things ....

I can hardly see Apple slashing prices in Mexico to be competitive.. actually their prices vis a vis with their US counterparts are 15-20% higher.

Not so much that I'd buy one,

You say you have one. So, technically, didn't you already buy one?

And maybe Steve-o had a dream once to play hockey, a dream that was shattered one winter afternoon on a lake in Regina. And he has not forgiven those Canadian bastards who destroyed his dream to this day.

Of course, if you people would just cede yourselves to the US as new states, you'd get all that added Apple goodness. And we'd get your strong dollar. See, it's Win-Win!
