Mac OS X 10.5.3 testing

Apple has already begun testing the v10.5.3 update to Mac OS X Leopard, according to reports. The developer community is said to be experimenting with a "9D10" build, which introduces changes to over two dozen of Leopard's components. AppleInsider sources mention alterations to components such as: Address Book, AppleScript, Back to My Mac, Dashboard, the Dock, DVD Player, Finder, iCal, Mail, Portable Home Directories, Rosetta, Spaces, Spotlight, Time Machine and VoiceOver.

Developer notes are said to list some 75 fixes in the current build alone, among these improvements to iCal alarms and synching, indexing in Spotlight, browsing PDF files within Preview, and the Dock's Stacks feature. More changes are likely to be made as the update progresses, a final release being expected in either April or May.

    Portable home directory?

I remember hearing the rumblings of portable home directories, but i thought it was cut. They are going to stick it back into leopard? Anyone know where that came from?

    re: portable home dir

This exists in the server version of both 10.4 and 10.5, but not the client version.

    please... please

... please fix Bluetooth while you're in there, and thanks for portable home directories in the client version (if that's true).

    Modem

I want the USB external apple modem to work! I downgraded to 10.5.1 because of freezes when trying to dial a number.

Not true. And if it was, it would cost you money, because Apple has to charge for any new feature then hand out now.

    Airport and Screensaver?

It would be wonderful if they could un-break Airport again, and fix the bug where you cannot exit from a screensaver while in Front Row. The latter being extremely annoying when you're trying to watch something.

Especially with the deliberately-broken "Resume Playing" feature in Front Row under 10.5.

    Re: airport

Wait. Are you saying the "Resume Playing" feature was deliberately broken in Leopard? I wondered why it was working differently then in Tiger. I reverted back just for that. (Well, that and the fact my mini kept freezing under Leopard).

    Front Row

Yeah, Front Row removed the ability to resume playing any non-DVD , non-iTunes purchased video file. It was a nice feature to have for a few years, but Apple arbitrarily decided that it had to go.

They also screwed up the skip ahead feature on the remote, BTW.

No, Apple don't charge "for every new feature". The feature updates of existing bundled or bought software are free. Additional software packages (as in iPod touch update) and additional hardware dependent capabilities (N WiFi in place of G) may be charged for, presumably because they weren't covered by the original EULA.
