Dell first with sub-$1K Blu-ray notebook

Living up to an earlier promise, Dell started the weekend by introducing what it says is the first notebook below the $1,000 mark to come with a Blu-ray drive. The 15.4-inch Inspiron 1525 now has the option of either a Blu-ray combo drive limited to burning DVDs and CDs or else a full Blu-ray burner; with the former option, the system price can dip as low as $879 while still supporting HD movies at 720p, Dell says.

The feat is accomplished through a new Broadcom-made Media PC processor that offloads much of the decoding work from both the main CPU and the GPU, saving the Inspiron from having to use a more expensive dedicated video chipset or a stronger overall processor. Broadcom has not revealed additional notebook makers involved with the project but says it has the support of Intel, Microsoft, and other top tech firms.

At the needed price point, the Dell system ships with a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo as well as the Blu-ray combo drive; HDMI is standard and lets the 1525 output HD movies to an HDTV or a similarly high-resolution screen. An 80GB hard drive and 1GB of memory are also standard on the portable. Inspirons customized to match Dell's claims begin shipping on April 7th.

Other companies, such as Sony, have often had to price systems well above the $1,000 price point or else have refrained from using HD disc formats altogether, such as Apple.

Apple slipping

Apple has traditionally been the first to offer the options of the future. What gives? Mac Pros- which are supposed to author Blu-Ray DVD's still don't have a burner as an option- and now Dell has it in a laptop? Apple better get back in the game.

I personally would be quite happy with Apple getting rid of the media drive in the MBP, same as they did in the air. With Digital movies and rentals, I have very little use to carry around a slug of BluRay DVD's with me. The other common use for BluRay's large media allotment is for backups. But, are mobile backups to DVD while on the go a large use? I doubt it. Most people I know, including myself, prefer to haul around a small external drive and let Time Machine do its thing. I prefer Apple keep the BluRay to the desktops and living room boxes and leave the MB/MBP a lean, mean, portable machine.

Well, it is nice you've fallen in love with Apple's video store. But not everyone feels that way. Although, Apple ripping it out would help them sell more on-line merchandise, so maybe they will do it.

Maybe they think that bluray is not the future, ever think of that, eh?

Be Rid of Printers too...

While Apple is busy "getting rid of the media drive in the MBP" because 'some' have little use for it, get rid of printers too. Wasn't there a saying when computers became commercially acceptable to be called the "Paperless Society". "Did you know that there was a “1998 Government Paper Elimination Act”? [1] I didn’t! But yes there was such an act. Federal agencies were required by law to stop using paper when creating new or storing current documents. And they had to make sure that all of their forms and other pertinent documents were available on line; and those agencies that accepted payments had to be accepting electronic payments by 2002! " - http://www.wincustomize.com/articles.aspx?aid=139136

Whatever happened to it???

I think Apple not using the drive is because they insist on thin laptops and slot-loading drive. The Inspiron is not thin (1.5" at its thickest) and Dell never uses slot-load drives.
