Apple BaseStation software

Apple on Tuesday issued an update to its BaseStation software for its wireless devices, including the AirPort Express Base Station, AirPort Extreme Base Station, and its recently introduced Time Capsule backup device (see our First Look). The update, which first appeared as "AirPort Base Station Update 2008-001" via the Software Update, includes general fixes and compatibility updates for AirPort Utility, AirPort Disk Utility, and AirPort Base Station Agent; however, it is now available as AirPort Utility v5.3.1 and is described by Apple as "the setup and management utility" offering a variety of options for each device. The 8.8MB update is available for both Tiger and Leopard (and Windows).

Time machine upgrade?

Can I now use a USB drive attached to the base station as a time machine backup disk (ala Time Capsule)?

I'm sure of it! It's not like Apple to leave you out in the cold like that!

you worked for Apple awhile back, no? Seems I recall your eager, positive posts... even one asking readers to wish you luck. What happened?

Nope, never worked for Apple. Never worked for MS.

What happened? I grew up and realized Apple was just a company offering a product, not a church with which all must worship under Jobs and all his decisions.

So the links in the article go nowhere. Software update found it on my Mac Pro, but not my iBook. I'm not sure what this update is for (since Apple is not clear). All I can say is, it does NOT add air disk support to time machine.

must agree

I also found that the new upgrade did not give me Time Machine support. But MacFixit reported that it did! And even some MacFixit users reported that they got Time Machine support. Are they crazy? Stupid? Maybe they already did the Time Machine hack? Anyone here able to get this working?
