Facebook adds musician, band profiles, resources

Facebook yesterday unveiled a section dedicated to musicians, designed to allow them to create profiles that demonstrate their music, videos, photos, and miscellaneous data. According to The Hollywood Reporter, artists can provide songs for streaming, a full discography, and sell tickets or merchandise, the latter of which is made available by Musictoday. Music that is posted in this manner also includes a link to allow users to buy tracks from the iTunes store.

Users can add artists as friends, just as with a normal Facebook profile, as well as post ratings or comments. The band can also send messages to the user, provided they enable the option allowing the band to do so.

As with standard Facebook accounts, music profiles are free. To help launch the service, Facebook has worked with professional musicians to provide over 80 initial profiles, such as Foo Fighters, Wyclef Jean, Dave Matthews Band, Alicia Keys, and Justin Timberlake, among others.

Sounds Useful :-)

While I'd be one to want to post songs for sale to iTMS via TuneCore, this would be a good way to get exposure. If you've already got a few networks set, it'd be simple enough to put out announcements, which you know are successful. The people who spend so much time on FB looking at pictures and playing with its add-ons are likely to spend at least a minute listening to a song.

While there are major names out there, as this posting mentions, I would think this would be more geared to the newly promoting musician. As someone who will soon put out an album, this definitely does sound useful, providing you get good reviews.

And, as you say, you have a few networks set up.

For if no one links to your facebook page, does it make a sound?

When I said, "had a few networks set up," I meant to say that you're in a few networks. You don't necessarily have to know the people in the networks or groups, but you can send them all an announcement, and plenty of people kill time checking stuff like that.

Personally, I'm only using FB at the behest of friends who were obsessed with spending time on the site. (you would not believe how many of their hours of work time in class were lost to the site). Why not use the FREE tools that are available?
