iPhone 1.1.4 pointing to Ireland?

iPhone 1.1.4 & Ireland

Apple's latest iPhone firmware update points to Ireland as the next country to carry the device, according to a new report. Macity claims that in probing the firmware's latest list of supported carriers, references have been added for both T-Mobile Austria and O2 Ireland. No announcements have been made for Ireland, but T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan has himself confirmed the iPhone's arrival in Austria during the first half of 2008.

The presence of new listings in the firmware has been a reliable indicator of expansion in the past, pointing to current carriers. Ireland is also aided by the fact that O2 is already the official carrier for the United Kingdom, which may reduce the need for prolonged negotiations. Similarly, T-Mobile has been carrying the iPhone in Germany since November 9th.

Can't wait to see how the pricing structure in Ireland will compare with the UK and countries that are also in the Eurozone. The "Sterling Difference" and a slightly different VAT rate has always provided a less than credible but nonetheless commonplace explanation as to why just about everything is more expensive in Ireland (even after taking all conversions into account!) Vas your botties iPhone lovers!

What about Canada?

When is Apple going to resolve their trademark dispute with Comwave in Canada to release the iPhone here? If they can't find a reasonable solution then change the name slightly so Canadians can get the iPhone supported on a GSM carriers network such as Rogers. That way they wouldn't have to resort to unlocking one from the USA which voids Apple's warranty.
