Dell pulls, but commits to AMD systems

Dell AMD in Doubt

Dell has caused a stir in recent hours by pulling some of its AMD-based systems from its online store, creating a concern that the PC builder would switch to Intel-only systems. With the exception of three systems -- the Inspiron 531 desktop as well as the Vostro 1000 and Latitude D531 notebooks -- all non-business AMD systems have been removed from the company's store. The company has since been directing customers to offline stores to buy the systems.

However, the concern over the shift has been overblown, Dell says today in its company blog. Despite fears, the move does not mark the end of AMD-based systems available with Dell; rather, it signals a shift from online to large stores such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart, the company claims. No plans are said to be in the works to phase out AMD processors entirely.

"We are committed to the AMD product lines as a long-term partner," a Dell spokesperson says.

Previously, the whole of the Inspiron notebook line as well as additional desktop and business offerings included at least one AMD option, such as the Inspiron 1421. Dell has not explained the shift but has typically sold AMD systems as low-cost systems, a choice which is often more popular at retail.
