Skype front-end beta available for Apple TV

updated 04:15 am EST, Mon February 4, 2008

Skype for Apple TV beta

Developer Brandon Holland recently unveiled a downloadable beta version of his Apple TV Skype plugin that uses a standard USB VoIP handset to make calls through the Apple TV. The plugin is a front-end, and requires the Skype framework to be installed prior to use. Holland offers a fairly in-depth video tour of the as-of-then working features, giving users a technical demonstration of the software's capabilities.

Holland says that there is currently no accompanying documentation at the moment, but that it will follow shortly. Installation and setup are currently on a do-it-yourself basis.

    AppleTV and iChat

I recently purchased an AppleTV and absolutely love it and was just speaking with a friend about AppleTV being a perfect device for iChat HD. How cool would that be... see and speak to your friends and family in HD!

Apple and/or other 3rd parties would need to develop an inexpensive HD USB camera, but it could be done.
