Dell preps designer Latitude E-series

Dell is working on a complete replacement for its Latitude professional notebooks that will compete in design with Apple and Sony models while catering to a business audience, if a leak through Engadget proves accurate. The platform, known so far as the Latitude E-series, would switch out the simple look of the existing D-series models with brushed metal and a one-piece hinge design; 14- and 15.4-inch models should be thinner than past versions thanks to LED backlighting. Smaller 12- and 13.3-inch systems will also exist; neither has been confirmed as using LEDs, but one report has indicated Dell ordering 12-inch LED panels for a future system.

The systems will reportedly also replace the DVI or VGA video output from larger Latitudes with DisplayPort, a new output technology used in Dell's 3008WFP and Crystal LCDs as well as upcoming displays from other firms. External Serial ATA may also make its first appearance on one of Dell's systems alongside mainstays such as ExpressCard and PC Card slots.

No details have been provided as to the release dates of any of the E-series models, though the computers may be timed to appear alongside Intel's Montevina mobile platform in mid-spring.

Not sure if that image is the new design or an existing product (couldn't find it on the Dell site), but it looks ok. Not really aproaching Apple looks, but better than any other Dell I've seen. The brushed metal looks nice, as well as the sharp edges, and note the "chicklet" style keys a-la MacBook (the best keyboard I've ever used).
