EMI, NY Daily giveaway

Following in the spirit of Radiohead's "pay-what-you-want" offer, EMI is flat out giving away music tracks to subscribers of the New York Daily News. CNET writes that the voucher is good for three song downloads from the labels collection of over 120,000 tracks, including an unreleased track, "It's Love", by Ringo Starr. EMI's promotion will run on this coming Sunday, as well as the one that follows.

Besides Radiohead's venture into music-oriented generosity, Prince has also leveraged a bit of publicity when he gave away free copies of one of his CDs to readers of a London tabloid. Leni Kravitz is expected to be orchestrating a similar promotion, which will occur in the UK on February 3rd.

Some in the music industry fear that giveaways devalue music, since they feel it parallels the common practice of music piracy.

The New York Daily News will compensate EMI for every track obtained in this manner.
