MS security report, Tiger
Microsoft employee Jeff Jones has published a Windows Vista one-year vulnerability report in his Security Blog that includes analysis of the Redmond-based company's newest operating system alongside its predecessor -- Windows XP -- and several competitors which include Apple's Mac OS X 10.4. A side-by-side patch event histogram comparison of Windows Vista vs. Mac OS X 10.4 shows that Windows Vista had fewer vulnerabilities and fewer times of concern for security teams.
"Windows Vista gain compares favorably against the other operating systems, having fewer vulnerabilities and having fewer weeks in which security upgrades potentially impacted security administrators," the report said.
Final observations show Vista in a positive light, focusing on positive points for Microsoft's newest operating system.
"My analysis found that researchers found and disclosed significantly fewer vulnerabilities in Windows Vista than either its predecessor product, Windows XP, or other operating systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, and Apple Mac OS X 10.4."
Jones' analysis also found that administrators were required to mobilize and address security concerns much less often for Windows Vista than any other operating system examined.

... Seems Microsoft is working on their own version of the Reality Distortion Field. Seems to work well on their own employees ...
... Either that, or Jeffie's gunning for a promotion.

"So, this is not an analysis of “the security”. I don’t look at protective mechanisms and see how they might protect in certain scenarios. Nor do I look at security features and see how they might enable better privacy or help secure business process.
And I certainly don’t look at how easy it is to manage the security policy for these products. Is there anything in this analysis which will prove one piece of software is “more secure” than another? No, that is not my intention."

Vulnerabilities vs..

Just because a system is vulnerable does not make it less secure. There are many factors which go into assessing overall security.
That being said, I am happy with any company that makes security strides. The more secure all OS's are the better off everyone's computing experience will be.

Good news

Well, I see it as only good news as I am not a fan of hackers and malware:) I don´t think that the superiority of Mac OS X lies in it being the most secure, and I don´t think that Vista isn´t creating excitement because it is less secure. To me, news that also Windows are beginning to become secure, is only good news. Hopefully hackers and crackers might face a tougher job overall in the future, no matter which OS they want to attack. I don´t see that they contribute with anything positive. The reason why they have had such sucess, lies of course with ealier versions of Windows. Windows made it easy to become a cyber-crook. It is about time that Microsoft succeed in making it mre difficult. Then the rest of us can concentrate on true creativity - and still, may the best OS win:)

that vista is relatively new compared to 10.4 so what they should have been comparing is vista to 10.5 which are both new operating systems not their new system to one that has had over a year and a half longer on the market.
what is ms smoking...
we may as well compare 10.5 or 10.4 to windows 98 or windows ME.
what a crock...

It just proves once again how easy it is to lie with statistics.

small marketshare

must be the reason, one thing I've learned from security "experts" everywhere is that vulnerabilities are somehow related to a system's popularity, so when and if Vista gets much marketshare then we'll see, hee hee hee
