White PS3 passes through FCC

White PS3 at FCC

A white PlayStation 3 has passed through testing at the Federal Communications Commission, filings show. The special version of Sony's game console does not have a release date, but devices approved by the FCC typically ship to the United States -- if they ship -- within a few months, as they already have a completed design. Specifically, the model from the FCC is a variant of the current $400, 40GB PS3, though Sony could easily decide to apply the color to the $500 80GB console, since the FCC's stamp is only needed for changes in wireless technology.

The revelation of a white PS3 for the US is somewhat expected, as Sony has traditionally resisted selling alternate colors in North America until recently. Gamers can still only buy black PS3s, and the silver PSP is a recent addition. The most colors are available for the PS2, which can now be had in black, white and silver. The white PS3 made its original debut in Japan.
