iPhone users reporting broken EDGE, SMS

iPhone EDGE, SMS errors
A number of iPhone owners are reporting an inability to use EDGE broadband or SMS messaging, effectively cutting them off from mobile data use. Accounts at both AT&T and Apple's discussion forums tell of customers receiving messages saying they are no longer subscribed to EDGE, forcing a call to AT&T for resolution. The temporary fix, however, involves switching to a pay-per-kilobyte data service, with the promise of a refund later. AT&T is said to be working on a permanent solution.
It was initially suspected that the issue was connected to Apple's v1.1.3 firmware update, but AT&T's support claims that the timing of the EDGE/SMS drop was coincidental. Instead difficulties appear connected to GoPhone pay-as-you-go plans, which are accidentally dropping the MediaNet component due to a computer error. Multiple regions across the US are affected, and AT&T does not have an estimated time for restoration of regular service.

iPhone ?

So, the problem is not directly iPhone related. It is more a generic mobile phone subscription billing problem. Next time a local ISP has an outage, "news people" can also report that Macs have problem connecting to the internet.

This isn't apple news, it's AT&T news. Unless it ONLY targets iPhone it is not an Apple news story. Slow day I guess.

I respectably disagree.
It affects iPhone users, and thus it is news. Most iPhones use ATT network, so issues with that will affect iPhone users. I do not troll through the various forums, I do come here regularly.
If this did affect me, I would only use the pay as you go (with refund) if ATT refunds interest as well (which is not likely).

"We can't provide you the service you already paid for, so pay us more for a different service and then we'll refund you."
AT&T, you must be kidding.
The first rule of dealing with big corporations is, NEVER give them money you don't have to-- I've read too many horror stories on consumer sites where people have been told, "Just pay the bill even though it's wrong, and we'll refund you when we get it straightened out," and it turns out that getting a refund is like trying to get blood from a stone.

Apple listen up, ATT sux!

This actually happened late Monday night. I was on the phone with AT&T Monday night, most of the day Tuesday and Wednesday. They kept insisting it was an iPhone problem and would transfer me back to Apple who would have to do a conference call with AT&T just to get them to do anything. They finally admitted to the problem yesterday, supposedly corrected it and the next thing you know I check my account and have a data charge for $93.10! Went another round with AT&T and buck passing but finally got the credit and told it was fixed. Woke up this morning to find I was charged again only to be transferred to Apple when I called AT&T and talked to a CSR. They had to do a conference call again and they finally admitted there is a known problem and said there is a 72 hour ETA. Apple just needs to give AT&T the boot because as soon as the AT&T CSRs see or hear the word iPhone, they immediately transfer you to Apple saying it's an iPhone issue.

The way AT&T and Apple work together or should I do not was an added reason why I returned my iPhone for a full refund.
Apple blames AT&T for issues that are only Apple's fault and AT&T does the same, leaving the customer caught in the middle.

Reason for the story
01/17, 02:38pm reply
The reason for the story is because people were blaming it on the iPhone update, when it had nothing to do with it. Now that the issue is settled, I doubt you'll see a follow-up.

This IS an iPhone
01/17, 04:26pm reply
It's an iPhone story because the particular unlimited Edge data plan was created to serve the iPhone market because always-available 'unlimited' data was part of the whole iPhone package. The package in question is actually called "iPhone PYP Data Plan".
