Cowon D3 to slim down, add high-res video

updated 02:30 pm EST, Fri January 11, 2008

Cowon D3

Cowon is already in the midst of developing a sequel to its relatively well-received D2 touchscreen player, representatives from the company's CES booth have said. The D3 should mark a performance upgrade and may be the first to play video beyond 320x240 despite its small frame. This size is also expected to shrink and will see both the overall surface area shrink as the device gets thinner, Cowon says.

Company spokespeople have also narrowed the timeframe for the D3's launch to approximately six months from now, suggesting a launch in July. No clues have been provided as to whether this refers to the initial Korean launch or an English version. The former would likely push the launch of an Americanized D3 to late 2008 or early 2009 in keeping with the four-month gap between the November 2006 release of the Korean D2 and the March 2007 Americanized model. A 16GB D2 was made available this August.
