JVC unveils GPS deck

JVC unveiled its new KD-NX7000 combination CD/DVD player with built-in GPS navigation, and has announced the return of its KD-NX5000 unit. The device features a 7-inch LCD, and a removable smart faceplate that includes a proximity sensor, illuminating buttons as the user's hand approaches. Users can also play media and use navigation resources simultaneously. The player comes preloaded with real-time traffic information for over 80 metropolitan areas in the US and Canada, with over 12 million points of interest. Maps are upgradable, while traffic reporting relies on the built-in NAVTEQ traffic RDS tuner. Pricing and availability for the new unit was not available.

Text-to-speech in seven different languages guides users through GPS navigation instructions, while the highly sensitive WAAS-capable GPS unit gives precise positioning information. Users can set destinations based on points of interest, previous destinations, phone numbers and vicinity; points of interest are gathered in categories such as restaurants, hotels, gas stations, among others. Destinations can also be searched by full name, while the ambiguity search can find results based on incomplete or misspelled entries.

The KD-NX700 can playback MP3, WMA, and WAV audio formats, as well as DivX and MP3 video formats. The deck can also read JPEG images; multimedia can be installed into the unit through the USB port or SD memory card slot. iPod owners can use the split-screen display to navigate the device, while artist lists remain searchable during song play. A KS-U20 adapter cable is required for iPod playback, and will be available in March for $50.

JVC is reintroducing the KD-NX5000 combination CD/DVD/GPS device; the player includes a 40GB hard drive that can store up to 24GB of music. Users have access to over 13 million points of interest, a built-in RDS-TMC tuner, as well as Bluetooth, while the device is also adaptable to satellite radio.
