Sonic the Hedgehog on iPod

Game giant Sega has released a new port of its classic game Sonic the Hedgehog, now formatted for iPods (iTunes link). The platformer is iconic to Sega, much as Super Mario Bros. represents Nintendo; the game was originally released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, and has spawned numerous sequels which continue to this day. Players control Sonic as he races through loops, jumps and other obstacles at high speeds, collecting rings and smashing enemies on his way to fight Dr. Robotnik.

The title is one of the most graphics- and control-intensive games ever released for iPods, requiring rapid rendering and precise input to be play properly. It is nevertheless available for fifth-generation iPods, in addition to Classics and third-generation Nanos. The game is a $4.99 download and is available from all iTunes Stores around the world.

    Controls

Does anyone have any information on the controls? I'd be curious how you can effectively replicate a control pad and two buttons on an iPod.

    Yeh, me too...

I really enjoyed playing Sonic on my Genesis. How can you get decent control on a scrollwheel 5G iPod?

Would playing this sort of game put a lot of wear and tear on a scrollwheel that was never designed for this type of gameplay?

Is that screen capture from a 5G iPod with video? If it is, it looks pretty detailed.

It might be kinda nice if Apple came out with an external game controller pad for the iPod touch unless there's a way that a touchscreen virtual gamepad (TVG) could be used. However I think that a TVG would be stressful on the iPod touch and hands.

    single button game

IIRC, the original Sonic the Hedgehog only used one button ("jump"). So it would work fine on a iPod.

The only thing I'm wondering about is Pause / Exit...

    How hard would it be

to allow iPod Touch and iPhone users to play these games? Even if the playable screen area is the same as the iPod Classic?

    i'll trade you

a 16 gig iPod touch for my Sonic-capable iPod w/ 80 gigs. Or, you can wonder why it won't play on the new, but decidedly different, iPod touch. Why won't Bolo run in OS X? Why, Why Why!?!
