HP notebooks vulnerable to hijacking?

HP notebook vulnerability

Some HP notebooks may be exposed to potentially serious code vulnerabilities, according to a SecurityFocus newsgroup discussion. A researcher working under alias says he has found flaws in an ActiveX control for HP's Info Center, software used to access system information and configuration. The difficulty is that if an HP owner visits a malicious website, a knowing hacker may then be able lay bare the software and the rest of a notebook, leaving it exposed to malware, registry changes, and other critical threats.

The flaws are dependent merely on the presence of Internet Explorer, as even if a user visits a page through a browser like Firefox, his system can still be called to load IE as necessary. A full list of threatened computers can be found here, which includes the 510 and 530, as well as numerous Compaqs ranging from the 2510p to the NW8440. HP has yet to confirm or deny any security issues. [via CNET]

    Bad news for HP...

That's bad. HP better patch this up, and fast. I guess I won't be going to HP for my next laptop, it will probably be a MacBook.
