Helio Ocean gains more advanced YouTube app

updated 10:05 am EST, Wed December 12, 2007

Helio Ocean YouTube

Helio this morning announced it would add a dedicated YouTube program for the Ocean, becoming one of the few outside of Apple to receive a customized YouTube client. The Pantech-made, dual slider phone receives the ability to not just browse videos either in landscape or portrait view but also to contribute; users can rate videos and add comments but also upload contributions taken using the Ocean's built-in camera. Uploaders can customize the title and tags for a video but also take advantage of the Ocean's GPS unit to geotag videos, pinpointing the location for later use at a site such as Google Maps.

The update is free for both existing and new Ocean owners subscribed to Helio's service, which is implementing the technology largely due to a reliance on third-generation (3G) data speeds across the company's network. LG has also made 3G YouTube phones available but has so far limited them largely to Asia and Europe. Apple's iPhone is widely believed to be restricted both by the lack of 3G support over AT&T's HSPA network as well as the absence of a dedicated video capture tool.

    Nice Frill

Now if only they spent some a portion of the considerable development resources they expended on behalf of YouTube support on making it possible to sync the Ocean with Mac address book and/or iCal. Or even Gmail and Google Calendar. Or Plaxo. Or Yahoo.

My biggest beef with the otherwise excellent Helio Ocean is that their support for data sync is virtually nil for anything other than Outlook on the PC.
