Default Folder X 4.0
St. Clair Software today released Default Folder X 4.0, a major upgrade to the utility for enhancing Open and Save dialogs under Mac OS X. The latest release brings a new modern interface to complement Apple's recent changes to Mac OS X, and leverages Leopard's QuickLook technology to provide previews that users can zoom in Open dialogs alongside the ability to add Spotlight comments in Save dialogs. Default Folder X 4.0 is priced at $15, and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
While the previous version of Default Folder X worked with Leopard, version 4 is revamped to improve the user experience and integrate with it, including supporting 64-bit applications such as Xcode.
"We're excited to deliver Default Folder X 4," said Jon Gotow, St. Clair Software's president. "The new look and feel are great, with everything integrating smoothly in Leopard and Tiger. The improved speed, large previews, and support for Finder labels will be a real productivity enhancement for our customers."
The release also brings many small changes and fixes like better support for the Japanese language, as well as solutions to compatibility issues with Microsoft Office, Mail, Graphic Converter, Amadeus Pro, TagBot, YummyFTP, and others.
Major changes include a smooth HUD-style user interface, a new preview window that floats below all Open dialogs, full-screen previews accessed by clicking on an image in the preview window, the ability to set the Finder label color as well as Spotlight comments in the Save As dialog, and a new 'Reveal in Finder' command that enables users to locate selected items in a file dialog using the Finder.

Great Upgrade!

This is an ESSENTIAL Mac utility!
The best new feature, aside from stunning graphics... pop-up menus that really POP... is the ability to set or reset file permissions from within any Open or Save dialogue box!
It's well worth the $35 shareware fee.

The upgrade price for existing owners of Default Folder X is $15 (not for the full program, as stated in the article). I upgraded immediately and it's well worth it.

i've used default folder since it first came out and i was looking for a utility to bring back the functionality of boomerang (in the days of system 5 or 6, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth).
i agree that $35 seems steep, but the update price has always been reasonable and this is one utility i wouldn't want to be without.
i love the new interface, the new quicklook like feature and the permission setting ability.
i couldn't work without it.
