Cambridge ships out Newton II, HD speakers

Cambridge Newton II and HD

Cambridge this morning upgraded its home theater speakers, starting with the introduction of the Newton II. The speaker series builds on the original by adding aluminum domes to the tweeters that improve clarity without affecting the overall sound; low-end and mid-range drivers have also been bolstered, the speaker designer says. Certain bookshelf and center satellite speakers also have new front ports to install them in cabinets or for wall mounts. Prices vary depending on the size and focus of the speakers, but start at $350.

The audio device maker today also added to its Newton HD series of flat-panel speakers tailored to HDTV owners concerned about space. Cambridge's line is now expanding to include both smaller and larger models: the MC630HD is explicitly designed for smaller HDTVs and fits well with screens as small as 26 inches; for premium users, the MC650HD adds the extra power and size for TVs 40 inches and larger. Either can team up with a P300HD subwoofer to improve bass response. Not all prices are available, though the company now starts the Newton HD line at $400 for the MC630HD.
