Leopard causing networking issues?

Some users are experiencing less-than-satisfactory network performance since their upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, or from the 10.5.1 update, and are seeking help on Apple's forums (1 | 2 | 3 | 4). The reports vary in circumstance, with some users having troubles on third-party network equipment while others that use the same hardware deny having any issues. Most of the complaints revolve around poor network reception, low speed, and a high ping rate – a type of network command that displays network latency in milliseconds. Most users with the problem seem to believe that it is a problem related to DNS entries, and some are turning to DNS hosting services such as OpenDNS.com.

Although the complaints are revolving around the same event (upgrading to Leopard), as previously mentioned, not everyone is experiencing the issue. There does not seem to be any common factors, as some have the issue when wireless, but not when connected directly to their router, while some experience problems with both.

Apple has not commented on the matter in any official regard despite numerous complaints from users.

I'm having these problems

I have switched to OpenDNS because my DSL DNS was awful. It wasn't good with Tiger, though, so it might not be a problem with Leopard.

Does anybody else think it's stupid to report on threads on Apple Discussions as if it's news?

By calling these issues out, more feedback can be posted (good and bad) to help narrow the issue and more quickly resolve it.

posting Apple discussions = helpful

I'm glad macnn brings it up and I keep hoping it'll make digg one of these days. It's been a month and not even an acknowledgment from Apple about this so I think Apple needs some more pressure put on them. My wireless on my MacBook Pro is useless and yes I'm using OpenDNS servers and all Apple hardware. I also get about half the speed from my wired network that I used to. "Self Tuning TCP"?

I don't think it's stupid at all. I appreciate this appearing here because I don't normally visit Apple's discussion forums.

Open DNS Rocks

I have DSL from a very small co-op, DNS I'm sure is an after thought for them. Switching my router to Open DNS significantly increased my enjoyment of my web experience. Because my latency already borders on 100ms with them (80-100), when coupled with shoddy DNS it was crazy laggy web browsing. Open DNS resolves snappy as any DNS service I've seen with an ISP.

I know I didn't add much to the topic at hand but for anyone interested in such things, Open DNS is a fine alternative to your ISP.

I haven't had any issues with 10.5 networking at home, I've yet to update at work, Groupcal is holding me back to 10.4 (and to be honest 10.4 runs smooth for me anyway). But I've been around the block long enough to know that some of these apple problems happen seemingly randomly, hell we had that flickering macbook problem that seemed to pop up randomly. I feel for the folks with slow networking.
