Fry's sells 20" iMac for $800 ahead of holidays [u]

iMac for 800 at Frys Sale

The electronics retail chain Fry's sold its current-generation 20-inch iMac for less than $800 ahead of Thanksgiving and "Black Friday", according to an ad that has appeared in an issue of San Jose's Mercury News. The image claims to have a new, factory stock 20-inch 2.4GHz model for $794, or just over half the $1,499 asking price for the standard system. This price will be in effect for just the one day, Fry's claims. [corrected: the sale was a one-day sale only on Wednesday, November 20th, according to Fry's]

The discount is notable as it contradicts Apple's historic policy of refusing to run sales on its products until they are replaced by newer models. The company in recent years has allowed Amazon and other major retailers to offer mail-in discounts on new systems, though these rarely exceed $150. It is unclear as of press time whether Apple had approved the iMac sale.

    Only in San Jose...

Read the fine print in the yellow section of the ad.

"Advertised prices only valid in metropolitan circulation area of newspaper in which advertisement appear."

    ROAD TRIP!!!

the use of a quotation mark instead of an inch mark in the headline... must mean something... must proceed with caution.

Not an iMac but a Mac min

This ad was in the paper for the 20th as a pre-Holiday sale. It was also in error. It was for a Mac mini with Fry's usual Apple sale of $5.00 off the list price.

    hum...

Those special sale items (if it's not a typo), usually have a limited # per store. Otherwise the store will lose money big time.

    Clarification

This ad was posted in the San Jose Mercury Tuesday the 20th as a one day pre-Holiday sale. In store, Fry's had a sign declaring that the ad was in error. It was, in fact, supposed to be an ad for a Mac mini for $794. This is completely in line with their standard Apple "sales" of $5.00 off of Apples list price. The ad was for the wrong item, and the "sale" price was for $5.00 off the correct item. (the Mac mini for $794 instead of $799)

    Online confirmation

If you search Frys' website for the seven digit product code (5353028), it pulls up the product page for a 2.0GHz C2D Mac Mini. As the previous post mentioned, it is a giant "typo".

    Can't trust'em

Fry's is run by a bunch of indians, the towel head kind not the native kind. They can't be trusted.
