Zune trumps iPod on Amazon
Microsoft's Zune portable media player is currently Amazon.com's top-selling digital music device, usurping Apple's iPod for the highest rank in the "Electronics" category. The 30GB Zune -- which Microsoft has heavily discounted to a purchase price of $134 -- dethroned Apple's 4GB iPod nano this morning in Amazon.com's list of top-selling MP3 players. Apple's 4GB iPod nano took second place, while the Cupertino-based company's 80GB iPod classic holds the no. 3 spot.
Microsoft's recently-introduced 80GB Zune player is labeled as temporarily out of stock with no future shipping date on Amazon.com, which coincides with the Redmond-based company's own statement that the 80GB Zune will be unavailable until early December.
Earlier this month Microsoft announced plans to improve on the basic formula of the iPod's customization for its new Zune players. The devices, dubbed Zune Originals, will optionally ship with four engraved lines of text as well as one of 27 various full-size drawings from well-known artists.

Lesson here

I wonder if the lesson here is that, for $140, people would rather have a 30 GB hard drive based device than a 4 GB flash-based device.
Though another lesson is that people are buying more of MS's last-generation device, than their current one.

Are there enough Customer

Just think, the only thing that Microsoft has to do to catch up is sell 115-million Zunes more and then they might be able to claim some sort of real victory.
In my opinion the Zune is still a somewhat ugly device compared to the iPod. I doubt they will ever catch the iPod unless they step up with a truly worthy contender.

I don't know, I bought a last gen iPod nano rather then a newer model because the price was really cheap. Price matters at times.
But I can't believe no one's yet mentioned that it's probably monkey boy buying them all up to push the sales ranks.

Strange, the iPod touch is $38 overpriced. :?
It seems that Amazon is sold out, no hard task then to sell more Zunes at a nice discount.

Ballmer is 'monkey boy', right? I'd hate to think I called him the wrong name.

Some DVD portable is #2. The WHITE iPod is #3, the Black is #7. Add them up to compare. Beyond that, it's still not actually outselling the iPod, by a long shot. Factor in all sales from all sources and then compare.
