Nintendo claimed as making DS with built-in storage

updated 02:55 pm EST, Fri November 16, 2007

Nintendo DS Lite Sequel

Nintendo has an enhanced version of its DS Lite handheld virtually complete and waiting for the right moment to ship, according to a Pacific Crest Securities analyst speaking with GameSpot. Researcher Evan Wilson refers to contacts who say the company has a design that abandons the legacy Gameboy Advance cartridge slot in exchange for built-in flash memory, larger dual screens, and a thinner profile. The delay is only because Nintendo has no reason to discontinue sales of the existing model when it sells as strongly as it does, Wilson says. Pacific Crest so far believes the revamped DS will be used to shore up sales only when they drop significantly across Europe, Japan, and North America at the same time.

Specific details of the platform are unavailable, though Nintendo has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the third model. An official spokesperson so far says the report consists of "rumors and speculation" and declined to provide more comment on the issue. The DS has regularly been considered the best-selling handheld console in recent years and has recently suffered from low supply due to sheer demand.

    Flash memory could be

Flash memory could be a good thing if Nintendo allowed some kind of transfer of older games into it. There are already gameboy emulators running older games, why not here. The problem with the thinner DS Lite is the GB Advance cartridge sticks out a half inch or more where the older DS has the cartridge flush with the case. A thinner case without protruding game cartridges would be great, IF you could transfer the older games. This could be done with a small cable, I think....
