Flyer purports Canadian iPhone in January

Rogers may be letting slip information of its own pointing to a set date for the release of the iPhone in Canada, according to a purported photo of a Rogers Wireless flyer submitted by Andrew Regalson. The allegedly untouched image points to Apple's "revolutionary" device on January 18th as an exclusive for the carrier. Though yet to be corroborated by additional reports, the date corresponds with Apple's practice of Friday iPhone launches in both Europe and the US as well as exclusive deals. The flyer is also consistent with Rogers' advertising themes.

Notably, unlike previous releases, Rogers is the only major carrier in Canada to rely on the GSM-based cellular service required for the iPhone. The alternative, Fido, is owned by Rogers and shares the same network.

The apparent leak follows a previous incident from the Canadian brewer Molson, which has been holding a contest which listed an iPhone as a prize and also claimed the iPhone would be released in January for the region. The company later removed the iPhone from the list but replaced it with an anonymous "portable telephone" that continues to resemble the product. Apple has not commented on either circumstance.

Until Apple announces something, it isn't true.

That looks like a Rogers leaflet to me. Jan 18 is only a year and 9 days since Mr. Jobs showed to the world. I guess Ted Rogers got out of his coffin for this one.

Until Rogers drops the price of their data plans (and the inevitable gouging on the phone price they must be thinking of), it might as well not be true.

...from $10/mo pay as you go to $XX/mo ransom for services we all may not all want or need? This would seem a fertile field for the competitions bureau, bless their bureaucratic little hearts...

at the moment, the same 5 GB that goes for $60/mo on the Verizon network would cost you $22710 on Rogers!! Even if you limited yourself to a minimal 500 MB/mo. (that's about 20 graphics-rich web pages per day), you'd still be playing $210/mo. Rogers thinks you're stupid enough to pay more for using the iPhone that financing a small car.

There's still the issue with Apple and the Toronto based company Comwave Telecom Inc. resolving the trademark dispute over who legally get's to use the name iPhone in Canada. Until that's resolved Rogers can't sell the Apple iPhone while Apple still uses the name iPhone. Maybe Apple could change it just for Canada calling it Apple Phone.

As for the other poster's data pricing comment I'm happy using my iPhone with 1 GB (1024 MB) data with overage $3.00/MB for $65.00 MSF. Though I admit I wish data plans were as competitive as voice plans are with Canadian wireless carriers. The nice thing about major cities in Canada (ie: Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, etc) is the WIFI Hotspot coverage and I can also choose to log in to a free WIFI Hotspot when available.
