Genius rolls out G-Pen 560, 350 tablets

updated 11:15 am EST, Tue November 6, 2007

Genius G-Pen 560 and 350

Genius today shipped out a pair of computer tablets it says are inexpensive enough to be truly accessible but share many of the features of higher-end tablets. The G-Pen 560 includes a 4.5 by 6-inch surface that offers breathing room for sketches as well as writing and presentations; it also boasts a pair of programmable hotkeys to assign to specific drawing styles, operating system commands, and other shortcuts. The device includes presentation and notetaking software as well as a pen that recognizes 1,024 sensitivity levels. It should support any Mac or Windows PC with a USB port and ships from several Mac- and Windows-oriented online retailers today for $69.

An alternative is available for users who need programmability over sheer size, Genius says. The G-Pen 350 (not yet pictured) has a smaller 3 by 5-inch drawing area and lacks the extra software. but reportedly gains 22 programmable keys and the same 1,024-gradient pen as the larger 560. It will be available online soon for Macs and Windows systems at a slightly lower $65 price.

    LCD?

The image here, and on the site, imply that this device has a built-in LCD screen. However, the specs don't mention it, and devices with screens are generally a lot more expensive. Is this misleading advertising, or a breakthrough device?

I seriously doubt it. More than likely it's an overlay that allows you to trace hard copy.

It's refreshing to see Wacom finally get some competition on the Mac side.
