Home-brewed iPod touch ad
Apple is preparing to air a new TV commercial on Sunday, October 28th featuring its recently introduced iPod touch. The commercial features a fast-paced overview of the portable player atop a song titled "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex," according to the New York Times. Interestingly the spot's creator, Nick Haley, is an 18-year-old student and Apple fan in the UK who created the content and uploaded his video to YouTube. There the ad received four out of five stars as well as numerous positive comments, and YouTube revealed more than 2,100 views of the home-brewed advertisement as of Thursday, October 25th.
Haley said he found inspiration for the ad in one particular lyric: "My music is where I'd like you to touch." Basing his visual effects on iPod touch video clips and other new product introductions viewable at Apple.com, the student said he was contacted by TBWA/Chiat/Day, a long-time Apple agency, about creating a professional version of the spot.
"I was sitting on the bus and I got this e-mail on my phone," Haley explained.
"We represent Apple and we've seen what you have produced and we'd like a chat with you," the message read.
Haley recalled that "This seemed ridiculous and far-fetched. My initial reaction was, someone wanted to steal it."
After his realization that the message was indeed legitimate, Haley traveled to Los Angeles to begin work on a broadcast-quality version of his home made advertisement alongside executives at TBWA/Chiat/Day.

For a young content producer, that must have been a dream come true. His resume is all set.

I don't care who you are, that's a neat story. Apple can win in so many ways with an ad like this that was created by a kid. They win even more if it was done on a mac.

ads Apple ever used. They should definitely use more videos from gifted amateurs and stop paying multimillion dollars to those crappy ad agencies. Fifty flunkies sitting around a conference table brainstorming a 20 second spot.... I love it. It sucks. Not enough color. Too much color. Three seconds too long. Three seconds too short. Use a white background. Use a black background. Anyone here ever use a Touch? No! Let's send out for eclairs and latte's. Everyone agreed. Yes, all agreed. Now we're making progress.

Im impressed they contacted him and brought him on board to help make a pro version of it. Some companies would have just copied it.

too, but they've gotten caught ripping other people off so many times in the past couple of years, they apparently decided to go legit this time.

Multi-million? Fifty flunkies? 20 second spot?
You obviously have intimate inside knowledge of the advertising industry.

Chiat Day made the "1984" spot that ran during the Superbowl in 1984. That was a great spot. It was, with broadcast costs, multi-millions of dollars. It was worth it, though. I also liked the "Think Different" ones, also by Chiat Day if I recall correctly. Worth the money, but it doesn't mean that there aren't indies out there who can do great work. I still wanna find the guy who made those "singing rodent with goofy eyes" Quizzno's commercials, and punch him in the sack.

One of the coolest lines of the story:
"I was sitting on the bus and I got this e-mail on my phone," Haley explained.

this is a great fresh song and it goes great with the commercial, which shows a lot of new iPod touch features.
I think making innovative ads is in your future and you should pursue this as a career if you are into it.
