Gateway to overhaul notebooks after Acer takeover

updated 11:40 am EDT, Fri October 26, 2007

Gateway Notebook Overhaul

Gateway will launch a reworking of its notebook line early next year as one of the first major changes in direction following the buyout by Acer, the latter company's president Gianfranco Lanci said at an investors' conference today. The chief executive said that the newly acquired company would see a "complete" upgrade to its notebooks as soon as the first quarter of 2008 as part of an effort to revitalize Gateway's name. The label has lost some of its impact in recent years by focusing on the wrong model lines while the market moved elsewhere, Lanci said.

"Gateway's problem in the US is that it mainly sells desktops, but the notebook is the fastest growing segment," he explained, alluding to Gateway's emphasis on its retail line, which is dominated by tower systems.

The executive also said that it was unlikely the Gateway name would be subsumed under Acer's, as it was important to have a minimum of two brands in every major region. eMachines was also expected to continue and would be complemented by Packard Bell once the takeover of that company was completed in the near future. No plans were mentioned to return Packard Bell to the US.
