MacTuneUp cleans, speeds up Macs

Macware today released a new way to clean up, optimize, and backup Mac systems. The software -- titled MacTuneUp -- is designed to prevent system instability and speed up a Mac in a few simple steps. The application quickly discovers as well as fixes problems, restores hard disk space, creates bootable disk backups, and maximizes internet as well as network connections to improve performance. MacTuneUp is priced at $30 and requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

The software enables users to create bootable backups of hard disks that are usable to create disk clones, move an operating system from one disk to another, or individually backup system folders. MacTuneUp also supports creating a disk image of a system volume that is usable to recover using Apple's Software Restore method.

"Accelerate your internet network connection with a few simple clicks to boost the performance of your email, FTP, internet browsing, chats, and other online activity," said Macware. "Keep your Mac running like new with an easy Maintenance Pilot that runs periodic tasks, repairs permissions and optimizes your system."

MacTuneUp aims to add an extra layer of protection to a Mac by configuring the firewall or adding a custom firewall with personalized rules to block harmful files.

I have not seen a need for anything like this for the Mac. For windoze yes, but for Mac no.

Most of the features are available from the Mac OSX command line, and some other apps for free.

There is no problem with network speed on a Mac. Any software based solution might minimize a few milliseconds on specific instances, but internet connection speed depends on many other factors that software cannot change.

Mac's built in Firewall is known to keep the hackers out, as in the $10,000 contest where hackers could not hack into a non-altered Mac OSX install.

Looks to be slightly more useful than virus scanner (useless because there are no known working Mac viruses) for Macs.

Um, you do know you could pass a virus to your windows using contacts, right?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to raise awareness instead of sticking your head in the sand and potentially infecting yer buds?

You could change your nickname to Typhoid Mary, and then you'd be covered. :P ;)
