Briefly: iSkin review, Foxconn threats

In brief: We have reviewed a new iSkin case for the iPod Video, reports are surfacing that the plant used to manufacture iPods sent SMS threats to publications criticizing their operations, iPhoneDrive has been updated, and there's a new iPhone/iPod repair service .. We have posted a review of the iSkin evo3 iPod video case. The eVo3 offers a wide color selection, quality materials, and a clever design. The case adds a bit of bulk to your iPod, but since it’s designed to protect, this is acceptable. All of the iPod functions are accessible, and iSkin even provides a protective flap that covers the dock connector. The hold switch is covered by an embossed button, and moving the switch feels a little awkward at first.

iPod plant used SMS threats to silence publications

A new article from Reporters without Borders says that Foxconn, the factory used to manufacture iPods, in conjucntion with the Chinese government, used phone, email, SMS text messages, MSN, QQ and RTX (Real Time eXchange) instant messaging, web platforms and other means to coerce publications into not disseminating negative reports about company operations. The report states "Last year, for example, two journalists with Diyi Caijing Ribao (China Business News) wrote several articles criticizing the way the Taiwanese group Foxconn, an iPod subcontractor, treated workers in its plants in China. Foxconn reacted by suing the journalists for 30 million RMB (2.9 million euros) in damages. In September 2006, privately-owned websites received SMS messages saying: 'Do not disseminate reports about the Foxconn case so that it is not exploited by those who want independence to advance their cause.'"

iPhoneDrive 1.2 adds music, video, photo access

Ecamm Network announced the release of iPhoneDrive v1.2. iPhoneDrive is a Mac OS X application which lets the iPhone and iPod Touch be used like a disk for portable file storage. This release also provides access to your music, videos and photos. The new version also greatly enhances iPhoneDrive's file storage feature, making it easier than ever to store your data on your phone. Possible uses include moving files between work and home, backing up important data, and keeping useful apps and installers with you at all times.

New iPhone/iPod repair service

Rapid Repair is a new service that specializes in fixing iPod and iPhone issues, particularly in situations where the needed repairs do not fall under Apple’s warranty. The company says "As a convenient and more affordable option then services offered by the Apple store, Rapid Repair can replace iPod batteries and repair screens— services Apple does not offer. We also do hard drive modifications and LCD customization."

I can only see this one quote, and it does not appear to be a threat. A demand, perhaps, a command even, but it is not a threat.

Maybe I had to be there to see it as such?
