Seagate Momentus PSD

Seagate on Monday grew the variety of its notebook drive line with the Momentus 5400 PSD, the company's first ever hybrid storage. The 2.5-inch drive's rotating storage is backed by 256MB of flash memory that caches frequently accessed data, including before boot time. Cutting the amount of disk access nearly cuts typical power consumption in half, from 0.78 to 0.45 watts; it also significantly reduces startup times, letting even the characteristically slow Windows Vista jump from 40 to 32 seconds despite the notebook drive's 5,400RPM rotation speed.

The drive connects to any portable with a Serial ATA disk interface and includes a more conventional 8MB cache for short-term data access. Seagate ships the drive in capacities between 80GB and 120GB and is primarily making the Momentous PSD available to system builders without revealing a price. Stand-alone versions of the normally OEM-only drive may be made available through resellers.

I'd buy this drive in a heart beat for my MBP if they made it in 200gb+.

I wonder what these things will cost.

    Characteristly Slow

So Vista is supposedly slow to boot at 40 seconds. On my Mac Mini Vista boots in Parallels when running off a FireWire 400 drive in 40 seconds. Tiger takes 30 seconds on the same computer.
