Gateway to crack $300 notebook barrier with Best Buy

Gateway ML6230 at Best Buy

Best Buy intends to get a headstart on "Black Friday" Thanksgiving sales by selling a Gateway notebook below $300, according to the retailer's flyer for some areas this week. The retailer intends to price the retail-only ML6230 for $299 after an immediate discount -- halving the price of the already inexpensive system, the ad reads. The 15.4-inch system is basic and ships with a 1.6GHz Celeron M, 512MB of RAM, and Vista Home Basic but also includes an 80GB hard disk and a DVD burner. A 4-in-1 card reader and 802.11g are also standard despite the price.

While the price drop represents the first major price discount this fall, the sale may include several conditions which limit sales only to some users and push many buyers upscale, readers warn. The lowest price will often be limited to states with high competition between retailers, such as California and New York; others will sell the notebook at a higher $350. Each store will also have just 10 units each and will sell only one unit per family to prevent stockpiling. The sale is expected to take effect tomorrow but may only be published by Sunday. My six-year-old needs a computer - he's always either at my PowerBook or my wife's iMac, so maybe he can get his tech fix here..Adults/serious users need not apply (of course). But this is perfect for my first grader! -dcw

I managed to snap one up and it is a great little machine! I think Gateway will be making a comeback.

I feel silly paying almost $2G for my other laptop
