Dell planning 15-inch XPS as MacBook killer?

Dell XPS M1530 Leak

Dell is close to releasing a new notebook with many of the same audience and features as the MacBook Pro, according to a new leak made by Engadget. The XPS M1530 would be the first 15.4-inch system in the Texas-based PC maker's performance line since the launch of the original XPS, but would be targeted at users equally interested in thin-and-light systems as in performance: the complete chassis should weigh as little as four pounds without a battery, according to the report. It will also optionally sport a 1440x900, LED-backlit display similar to that of the MacBook Pro that should both cut down on the overall thickness of the display as well as improve battery life and color accuracy.

Unlike the Apple system, however, the M1530 would also scale further for users who want the design without the associated cost in performance, according to the leak. A stock model would ship with relatively low-cost hardware such as a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo and a GeForce 8400M GS, but would ramp as high as a 2.6GHz processor and a 256MB GeForce 8600M. Every system would have 802.11n Wi-Fi as well as the option of a Blu-Ray drive; HDMI out will connect both audio and video to an HDTV across a single cable. A webcam would be standard but would either capture video at 0.3 megapixels in the thin LED-lit screen or up to 2 megapixels with more traditional cold cathode fluorescent displays up to a 1680x1050 resolution.

Dell is said to be officially targeting the new XPS system for a November 7th launch to capitalize on holiday sales and take advantage of Intel's release of its 2.6GHz, non-Extreme mobile CPU. The release date may change depending on unforseen delays similar to those that affected the M1730.

    Missing Feature

"...many of the same audience and features as the MacBook Pro..."

Except for the one most important feature of them all, MacOSX.

    macbook killer?

How can that machine be a macbook killer?

Mac is about a total experience: namely the hardware/software symbiosis. Without the right software it will be only a soulless device.

    Materials

I don't know about you all, but a lot of what I love about the MacBook Pro are the materials used to make the machine. The brushed aluminum is just so stylish and smart. Along with the ambient light sensors, smart networking, multi-OS capabilty, so on and so forth. To be a killer in the technology world you mustn't do all the same functions, but do the key ones better; this Dell, well, I think I may be sick.

WHat is #6 in the pic?

Is #6 a vent for cooling? Or is that the optional "hot rod" attachment for that 2.6 GHz processor? It will be interesting to see the pricing on this - the MacBooks are a great deal for most people that are going to be the 1.5 GHz target demographic for dell - they are really gonna have to undercut the MacBook price on the low end, but will Vista even run on a 1.5 GHz processor? I am suprised that Dell would not just use the intelGMA graphics on the low end, though.

I the long run though, any competition for Apple on the hardware side is great, helping drive prices lower and features up. This is just another piece of the catch-up puzzle for dell. Too bad Apple keeps changing the completed image. Maybe dell should just shut down and give the money back to the shareholders? Is there any money in commodity laptop sales? IBM? Anyone?

    Killer?

I hate that term. Nothing Dell makes will ever be a 'killer' to Apple. While Dell does a great job of commodity computer sales, Apple creates machines with style and class. Apple has shown that a lot of consumers will pay extra for ease of use, security, and a stunning design.

Dell's design is ugly at best.
