JVC 180Hz HDTV Screen

JVC has used its time spent at Japan's CEATEC technology show to demonstrate what it says is the first LCD panel with a 180Hz refresh rate. The 32-inch sample display uses a custom algorithm that can successfully interpolate a typical HDTV feed, which runs at 60Hz, and insert two frames of its own. This improvement cancels out much of the blur in fast movement, even when compared to today's premium 120Hz sets. Images often appear sharper even if the TV runs at a lower resolution, according to JVC.

The panel is currently a prototype and runs at 1024x768 rather than the 720p (1280x720) more common for sets its size on the market today. Pixel response times are also affected due to the increased delay in generating a finished image, precluding a near-term launch; using the most recent tricks to improve performance could reduce those times by a critical 5 milliseconds that could make it truly useful, the company says. Production plans for the display are likely but were not announced at CEATEC. [via Nikkei BP]

Call me crazy, but I'd kind of expect them to offer a picture with decent focus to accompany the story.
