Joost opens to wider downloads

Joost downloads go public

Formerly available only through a limited, Gmail-like system of invitations, Joost has been made a public download, available for free. Joost is an Internet TV service based on a local client, which allows full-screen viewing of channels including A&E, Raindance, and Ministry of Sound; to alleviate bandwidth problems, video is distributed across a peer-to-peer network. Companies make their profit through advertising and licensing deals.

The software is now also at v1.0, despite still being marked as a beta. Upgrades include notifications when new content has been added, the ability to link videos directly, and for Mac OS X a built-in updater, through which all future patches will be delivered. The PC software requires Windows XP SP2, while the Mac client requires an Intel CPU and Mac OS X 10.4; both versions are dependent on a broadband Internet connection.
