M-Audio ships new KeyRigs
M-Audio has begun shipping two new USB keyboard/software packages, the most basic of these being the KeyRig 25. The 25 is a 25-note keyboard, designed in part to be compact so it can be easily transported. Aside from the notes, there are eight MIDI-assigned knobs and buttons, which can be used to trigger tracks, loops and instruments. The KeyRig 49 meanwhile is a more conventional keyboard, expanding the notes to a full 49 for flexibility.
Both keyboards come with M-Audio's Key Rig software, which features four modules ready for use solo or as plug-ins: SP-1 Stage Piano, MS-2 Polyphonic Synthesizer, MB-3 Tone Wheel Organ and GM-4 General MIDI Module. A master section lets users route, split, layer and mix the modules as needed, and insert a general effect on top of the effects available for individual instruments. Each keyboard is now shipping for $130.

Why, oh why, for the love of Steve, do keyboard controllers control everything out there except for GarageBand? Yes, M-Audio makes a controller for GB, but it doesn't control anything else unless your software has the ability to "learn" the input signals so that they can be re-assigned. I have colleagues who work in GB, while I usually use Logic. My Tascam US-2400 controller is a great piece of gear, but I can't use it for GB and that's a real disappointment.
