Apple begins shipping iPod touch to retail [photos]

updated 09:00 pm EDT, Fri September 14, 2007

iPod touch photos

Apple's new iPod touch began shipping to its retail stores (as well as very few customers) this weekend -- but iPhones were still the popular ticket at its San Francisco flagship location. Apple's retail stores began receiving shipments of the 16GB model on Thursday, but by Friday had still not put them on display. Representatives said that they didn't know when to expect shipments of the 8GB model. Built around the iPhone design, the new iPod touch is thinner and more compact as well as sports few new features not yet available to iPhone users, including the iTunes mobile music store. However, it does uses the same multi-touch interface. We have the traditional unboxing photos and a quick look at the over-the-air purchase process. Update: While few customers report receiving their iPod touch, some Apple retail stores and some Best Buy stores have received both 8GB and 16GB models.

Apple should be shipping to people (like me) who pre-ordered before retail. What's up with that?

    8GB Sighting

I bought a 16GB Touch at the new Natick MA store today, but they also had 8GB models available. However, none were on display... you had to ask and then they would be retrieved from the back.

So when do they reach West London?

I have 300 quid burning a hole in my pocket like nobodies business.

I also bought mine locally today at Best Buy and canceled my order through Apple. I ordered 22 minutes after the demonstration ended...as soon as the Apple store came online and yet folks were able to buy them locally at non-Apple stores.

Please explain what the point of preordering is these days?

    Pre-ordering-no point

There is no-longer any point in pre-ordering. Apparently Apple is more interested in getting them into retail locations than honoring those who pre-order. The times they are a changing, and so is Apple. Too bad, and oh well. What do you do?

    Times Changing?

Apple sell consumer electronics... they exist almost exclusivly on the "Apple Brand", If the product is not in the shops, they will lose everything they have worked for...

I never understand why people preorder a high volume product like an iPod... you know there won't be a shortage of them... apple won't make that mistake again... The Online ordering system should be used if you can't easily get to a retail location :-)

    why people pre-order

There was a time, and some instances where other companies still do, have products in retail stores AND delivered to pre-order customers the SAME day. Also, yes, it is not always easy or convenient to get to retail locations.

"Apple sell consumer electronics" uh, yeah, I didn't know that.

    Send me my touch NOW!

I would rather have my Apple item come to me. Not vice versa. And I want it sooner than later. That is why I pre-order. Yes, I can easily get to a retail location, but doesn't it cost Apple more to sell through retail than online? Or is it a way to steer people to the store?
