EVE Online to migrate to Mac

updated 10:45 am EDT, Tue September 11, 2007

EVE Online coming to Mac

The massively multiplayer game EVE Online, currently only available to Windows gamers, should soon be available in Mac and Linux versions. Game developer CCP Games has made a deal with TransGaming, who will incorporate its Cider and Cedega portability engines into EVE Online's code. No prices or specific release dates have been set for the new game versions, but they are expected to ship before the end of the year. Players of EVE take a starship and explore the galaxy, earning money for upgrades while fighting off raiders and major player factions.

    migrate?

Adding a new platform is not a migration. Migration implies moving to a new platform. Perhaps that is what they are doing (can't check the link at work as games sites are blocked).

    Intel Macs Only

Since this uses Cider, it will only run on Intel Macs.

    Cider

And if it's like the EA games, only Intel Macs with standalone graphics card - i.e. not MacBooks.

Face it, nobody is going to rewrite PC games for PPC Macs anymore now that they are no longer being sold. There's simply no money in it.

    Cider

Well, as much as I like games coming to the Mac, Cider is not the best way to go. I bought C&C 3 for the Mac, and while it works well most of the time, there's a definite performance issue with Cider, and I've also had lots of crashes and lockups when running the game. All this technology will do is bring half-assed ports to the Mac which won't encourage developers to write cross-platform code. Blizzard and id can do it, why not anyone else.
