Sony makes A700 official

In the wake of an accidental leak yesterday, Sony has now officially announced its A700 DSLR camera. A 12.24-megapixel sensor is confirmed, as is HDMI output and an 11-point autofocus system, whose accuracy can be improved by setting aperture to f/2.8. Image quality is aided not only by an image stabilizer, but by two in-camera noise reduction filters, one before and another after analog-to-digital conversion. The camera can shoot at an infinite 5fps in JPEG mode, or up to 18 frames in RAW.

Another feature is an upgraded Dynamic Range Optimizer, which offers five settings of corrected shadow detail, and a bracketing mode that produces three different images per shot. Bundled remote capture software allows the camera to be controlled completely via USB, with photos being stored on a hard drive instead of CF cards or Memory Sticks.

ISO range extends from 160 to 6400, giving wide options in detail versus light sensitivity. Accompanying the release of the 700 is a new vertical grip, and two new lenses, the DT 16-105mm 3.5-5.6 ($580) and the DT 18-250mm 3.5-6.3 ($550). In spring of 2008, Sony will ship a 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 SSM G lens with a wave motor. An A700 kit with the 16-105mm lens will ship in November, for $1,900; body-only and 18-70mm kits will arrive earlier in October, costing $1,400 and $1,500.

    fewer k****!

It seems that Sony have completely abandoned the dual control k*** design of the original Maxxum or Dynax 7D, in the process moving more of the features to menu based control. Pity, this was one of the most attractive features of the 7D, essential controls available without having to resort to menu navigation. They are rapidly moving away from the Minolta ethos, which is to be expected from Stringer's Sony that demonstrates an uncanny reverse midas touch that turns gold in sh*t!
