TomTom launches GO 920, ONE 3rd Edition in US

TomTom GO 920 and ONE 3rd

GPS maker TomTom on Thursday brought two of its latest GPS systems at the high and low ends of its navigator ranges. The 4.3-inch GO 920 has the most built-in map data of any of TomTom's receivers and uses 4GB of flash memory to store not just Canadian and US maps but also 41 countries in Europe, in addition to an SD card slot for extra data. Drivers are also more likely to have a more reliable position lock, TomTom says, with a new gravity and motion system that can automatically estimate the actual position when the GPS signal drops out. A similarly new, optional traffic receiver gives the GO 920 the choice of either the usual TomTom Traffic feature or the new addition of more universal Traffic Message Channel (TMC) support, either of which feeds road congestion into map data to avoid delays.

The 920 borrows from earlier high-end GPS units with Bluetooth hands-free calling, a connection for iPod support, and the collaborative Map Share feature that allows users to add their own notes and pass them to other users. The base GO 920 comes with a dock and ships in the fall for $600. Those interested in traffic support can also pick up the GO 920T, which bundles the traffic receiver and a one-year subscription to TomTom Traffic for $700.

Simpler needs are said to be met by the ONE 3rd Edition, a refresh of the familiar 3.5-inch starter model. TomTom's revision improves the user interface with customization and quicker searches. The new ONE is the first to carry Map Share and optional TMC support; it also brings TomTom's recent Help Me feature that can quickly find the nearest hospital or even provide help with first aid. Maps of North America are stored on 1GB of built-in memory and the SD card slot of the device, which will be ready next month for $250.
