Nokia rolls out N95s with 8GB, US-based 3G

updated 09:00 am EDT, Wed August 29, 2007

Nokia N95 8GB and US 3G

Continuing its announcements, Nokia today has also launched two versions of its popular N95 smartphone. The expected N95 8GB coats the previously silver phone in black and adds its namesake 8GB of flash storage to turn the device into a full-time portable media player replacement. Nokia estimates about 20 hours of video or 6,000 songs in a highly compressed eAAC format (2,000 at normal quality). Its screen has also been expanded to 2.8 inches -- one of the largest for an N-series, the company says. The 8GB model is due to ship in the fall for 560 Euros ($763) and is likely to show in North America as an unlocked device, similar to the original.

The Finnish cellphone producer has also capitalized on the surprising success of the original N95 in the US with a new version that adds explicit 3G support for North American GSM networks; subscribers with data plans can use HSDPA on 850MHz and 1900MHz bands, providing a much faster mobile Internet connection on AT&T or Rogers. Subtler upgrades include a higher-capacity battery, a preinstalled assisted GPS function, and a 1GB microSD card that gives viable storage out of the box.

As with the previous release of the N95 in the US, Nokia makes no attachments to existing carriers; the updated version will be priced at a flat $699 price and arrive in September only at 3rd-party resellers, including online stores.

    $699 !

And they were saying the iPhone is overpriced! Unlocked, yes. Overpriced, definitely.

    Still lacking keyboard

Tempting, but I still want QWERTY. That's the only thing that is keeping me from making definite plans to get one.
